Any Dream Will Do.......

Always Keep Your Dreams

It’s 4am in the morning and I can’t sleep - I go to my laptop but instead of working I start day dreaming. My mind start whirling about one of my biggest dreams, a dream which I would dearly love to do with my friend (& co-chair) Bob.

People think I’m crazy!!!!

Shall I tell you my dream?

Bob, like me is a wheelchair user and like myself an adrenaline junkie. Being disabled means we would need a lot of support to fulfil this dream. We have looked into doing this but nobody wants to know or help in anyway. My big dream is that we would be supported to do it……

Close your eyes and dream with me……
Think about a woman stuck behind a computer sending emails to everyone she thinks could help. WHEN suddenly ping!!! Goes the email receive button, she looks, reads, and reads again. The email comes from Sir Richard Branson’s office saying that they will make our dream come true!!!

The support to abseil down Big Ben has started……
A woman named Melanie comes to see us to find out exactly what our needs will be. First off she gets the permission from City of London and gets the insurances sorted all by using the name of Richard Branson she slices through the red tape that would have caused us so much anguish.

“Now tell me exactly what help you think you need, after all you know better than anyone what support I should get for you. You’re the experts on yourself”. Melanie got everything together in such an organised fashion and without months of waiting, she emailed every couple of days and kept us abreast of everything that was happening.

The Big Day arrived and Bob and I were driven to London together in a specially adapted car (it was fantastic to actually travel in a car together usually we had to go separately as no car would take us both).

Westminster and Big Ben came into sight, we had arrived. There were all the people around that we needed, Melanie had even thought about making sure that the coffee I always drink was on hand for me to have afterwards. There was also the added surprise of there being news people there to publicise us, but more importantly our organisation. And she had got sponsors for our abseil from lots of prominent businessmen. More Money for Direct Payments User Network.

The biggest surprise was Paul Hope the Minister for Social Care and Anne Macquire the Minister for the Disabled were both there. Melanie said “they’re here to see that disabled people can really have the choice and control over their lives!!!” “They are always saying those words. So let’s get them to see it in action”.

Two men introduced themselves to us and said they would be guiding us down and were there any particular things we wanted them to do. It felt so good to be in charge of our dream…
The descent began and the adrenaline was up. The men seemed to anticipate what we needed. I felt the most important person in the world, everything I said was taken on board. All too soon the ground was before us!!! PLOP we landed

Just like you I had closed my eyes but I went to sleep and realised I had only been dreaming after all. Will it ever be? For who would take so much notice of a person like me, people only ever notice the wheelchair and what I can’t do rather than what I can.

BUT IT WON’T ALWAYS BE LIKE THIS!!!! I will show them……..
